Silberkuhlsturm

In January 2016 the construction work for the, almost 12,000 m² gross floor area, new office building Silberkühlsturm in Essen GRUGACARREE started. The international energy service provider ista will relocate its headquarters from Grugaplatz. The new building comprises a total of six floors and is designed according to plans by the Hamburg architectural office BN ARCHITEKTEN borchardt.nentwig. As general contractor, HOCHTIEF Building has taken over the construction work. The completion was completed by the end of October 2017. The successful development of the site on which the Grugastadion and the Festwiese had previously been located was completed with the current new construction project. The name Silberkuhlsturm goes back to the historical foundation of the property. In the summer of 2001, excavations of the medieval silver chimney from the 15th century were excavated on the site. In the vicinity of the tower, the so-called silver cow, silver-bearing ore, which was then stored in the tower, has been promoted. After the second world war he was removed to its foundations. These disappeared in the following years under high rubble layers. Since 2010, the ground is sheltered underground and can not be visited. The Silberkuhlsturm is today regarded as a testimony of one of the germ cells of early Essen mining.
